Chickens and More Chickens and Some Bobwhites

This spring we bought some new chickens to add to our flock.  They are so pretty.  The twins, Gianna, and Brech picked them out.

We also raised more meat birds.  When all birds were butchered we ended up with 140 birds in the freezer.

Darren also invested in some quail for hunting.  They are much bigger now, but still small compared to our other birds.

These birds are from our original flock or last year's chicks.

Quail

We are trying an experiment this summer.  It involves quail that decided to not thrive.  We lost half of the hundred we ordered within a week.  They got chilled during shipment.  The rest have been fighters.

They were SO small!  The crazy thing was that they were "flying" within a couple of weeks.  It made it hard to water and feed them without one or two getting out.

They grew quickly, but were still tiny compared to chickens.

They have a beautiful song and are very pretty game birds.

Kittens

About Mid June we got to meet the kittens who were under the shelter.  Momma Dora brought them to us with a look that said, "Human, they are yours now.  Feed them."
This is Adorable and the only girl of the bunch.
This little one is Swiper.  Like, Swiper no swiping, Swiper.
This bad boy is Boots.  He's a handful!

New Chicks

Kiara got to ride along to pick up our new chicks.  The girls and Brech each got to pick their favorite chicks as a reward for working so hard on their chores.  They each got four of their favorites.

Kiara carefully held them on the way home.
She was such a great helper!

 Crazy heads!
SO cute! They have been checked, double-checked, and triple-checked every day.  The kids are super excited to have new baby chicks.  Just wait until you see what's coming in the next few weeks.  Let's just say, we are crazy!!
