Just Another Day
Heifer birth circle
She was "surrounded" by other heifers. When her water broke she scared them and they all ran away. Funniest thing I had seen in awhile.
Darren started calling me Mama Bovine because the calves would follow me around.
It is mostly because my coveralls smelled like calf poop, milk replacer, and a host of other barn smells. I even had a mama cow lick me. I wonder if she thought I was her baby. Again, those coveralls were really stinky.
Kickin' Up Our Heels
Towards the end of February we had just enough snow to make it feel like winter, but not enough to be hard on the herd. These calves were having such a blast at the Nursery. I could have stayed all day watching them play. So happy to be experiencing all these things!
The Nursery
This barn was called the Nursery during heifer calving season. This is where we moved pairs after the calf was up and walking fast enough to keep up with its mom.
Gianna loved to go see the babies at the Nursery.
Learn to Drive a Tractor - Check
Sooooo, Darren got desperate and brought in the B Team (Blase and I) to do the chores for a couple of days. Sometimes he needs those extra hours to get something else finished. Soooo, the B Team is not very experienced. Scary thought - Blase had been in a tractor more than I have - ever. Maybe we are more like the Bottom of the Barrel Team.
This is the "other blue tractor" that I ran.
That is the bi-directional that Blase ran.
We made a great team - and still are a pretty good team.
Humm, I drew the imaginary short straw and had to go up to change the light bulbs in the barn.
First Calf of 2017
On February 16th we had our first calf of the season join the family. I am still amazed even though we are over half way through the whole herd at this point.
