Chicks and More Chicks

We decided to try incubating some of our own eggs.  We did end up with a few that actually hatched and survived.  It was a great experience for all of us.  I can't wait to try again in the spring.

This mother hen decided to "fly the coop" and raise not ONE, but TWO families this summer.  We thought she was a coyote appetizer so we were quite surprised to see her with a bunch of chicks.

Chicks are just so cute!
We had about 300 (ish) chickens this summer/fall.  We butchered 200 of them for meat birds, lost a few for various reasons, and have the remaining chickens as layers.  Blase and Stephen were on chicken duty while Gianna was our egg gatherer.  We are getting to be quite good at butchering.  We did butcher on some of the worst days though.  Wind, cold, rain...maybe some snow.  Ugh.
This was two weeks worth of eggs.  Now the chickens are molting so we have to buy eggs.  Feast or famine!!
