From the museum guide:
Begun as a local project in 1973, Lake Superior Railroad Museum has rapidly grown into one of the largest and most respected railway museums in the country. The Lake Superior Railroad Museum is housed within Duluth's restored Union Depot complex, with most of its major exhibit space enclosed for all-weather viewing. The museum focuses on railroading in the Lake Superior region, which is reflected in the collection.
Our first stop was not Number 1. It was number 13....the china display car. Ha ha
(We toured this freighter a handful of years ago.)
The china displays reminded me that I was born in the wrong generation. Oh, the beauty of the days gone by. There were so many sets on display. I didn't even take pictures of a quarter of them.
The kids had fun pretending they were working in the railroad's post office car.
The wheels would move while they were telling a story. Neat idea.
There was a little "town" set up on one side. You could see what shops looked like when railroad travel was the main mode of transportation.
set up to show Lincoln's funeral car
One of the neatest displays was the Immigrant Waiting Room.
These people were amazing. To leave behind their families and homeland to come here was an undertaking few of us can understand.
After our tour of the musuem (which we could have spent another two hours in), we loaded up for a train ride up the coast of Lake Superior. The train museum was a great start to that trip.
