An After Midnight Tale

An After Midnight Tale
starring:
 Karen as the "Scaredy Cat"
a cat
a puppy named Rogue

Our tale starts at 1:30 AM.  Karen sees that the sky is beautiful that night.  The stars were bright and not a cloud in sight.  She decided that she is going to go outside to take a picture or two or three of the night sky.  Karen is brave because what you don't know is that the yard light is out.  It is pitch black outside.  She takes her phone and uses the flashlight to see her way out onto the gravel road in front of the house.  It's not too far away, but far enough in the pitch black.

Karen is amazed at the beauty in the sky.  She has always been a star-gazer and loves everything about a clear, bright night.  Here is a picture of the sky.
Well, that was an epic failure.

Let's try again.
Ohhh, look there is something showing up.  It isn't anything like what the sky looks like, but at least it is light in the darkness.

Try again.
Well, poop.  Seriously disappointing.

Who was she kidding anyway.  It's a cheap camera that probably won't catch the sky in its full beauty anyway.  What was that?

Seriously, what was that sound?

Oh, no - the wolf is coming to get Karen.

(Cue scary music played during chases/hunts in spooky movies.)

(Cue the close up shot of Karen running very fast in the dark.  She's too scared to turn the flashlight on her phone on.)

(Cue dramatic look over her shoulder.)

Our brave Karen has made it to her garage.  Wait, she's going back out???  WHY in all that is holy are you going back out there????

(Cue more scary music.)

ROGUE!!!  ROGUE!!!  Where are you puppy???!!!!

Karen turns on the flashlight and scans the horizon.  EYES!!!  Eyes by the shop.  Oh no, it's the wolf.  No, wait....false alarm, it's just the biggest black cat on the place.  Stupid cat.  Can't you see this is a scary movie...go away!!!!

ROGUE!!  Where is that puppy!!???!?!??

(Cue very sleepy puppy stumbling around the corner of the garage with a very not happy look on her face.  You know, if puppies could give you a very not happy look.)

Karen grabs onto Rogue's collar and drags the puppy into the garage.  Phew......

We are all safe.

Well, in hind sight - it was probably just a cow coming for a drink of water.  In the moment it was the wolf that had killed a neighbor's calf just a couple of nights earlier.  This really did happen.  There really was scary music - in my head.  There really was a dramatic look over my shoulder.

The light is still out.  I'm not sure I'm brave enough to look at the stars at night, by myself, again.

THE END.

2017 Garden

Apple Pie in the Sky
My garden is named Apple Pie in the Sky because I have "high hopes" for it.
My garden has a mouse.  A cat's toy mouse to be specific. I find it in different parts of the garden depending on which way the wind blows.  I'm assuming it belongs to one of the cats.  It's falling apart though.  I'm not sure it will last the gardening season.
This is basically the garden before we planted.  You can't quite see the edges of it.
I could be a bit busy this year because it is HUGE!
We had a hard freeze coming on May 20th.  I covered everything that was up and green.  We used five-gallon buckets, boxes, tarps, sheets, coffee cans, and packing/moving blankets.
I found out the next morning that the tarps were a bad idea.  Everything under them got a bit of freeze damage.  It was unexpected to say the least.  Everything under the plastic buckets or coffee cans also had freeze damage.  It was so much work to cover all the tomatoes (44 of them) and peppers (22 of them), and 6 rows of potatoes.
Then a couple of days later there was another freeze warning.  So we covered everything up one more time.  This time I used only cardboard boxes and blankets or sheets.

I'm pretty sure I'm tired of gardening already!

Just a Bit of Wild Life

Stephen's Pockets

One day not too long ago I asked Stephen what he had in his pockets.

He started pulling things out of his pockets and I couldn't believe it.
Can you believe it?

He tickles me.  This collection is Stephen to a "t".

Mother's Day

For Mother's Day this year I was given new glasses, two bubble baths, a new book, and Candy Cane Kisses I hadn't opened that I'm sure they gave me for my birthday or Christmas.  Thanks, Gianna.  It was funny because I told her she should give them to me for Mother's Day and she took me seriously.  Gosh, I love that girl!

The Trio

We have three bucket calves under our care.
 King Kong, Anneliese, Chase

King Kong's mom died when he was about 6 weeks old.  Catching him was a rodeo I don't want to be part of again. King Kong has a powerful kick.  I was driving the buggy and Darren was roping.  He said I wasn't a very good roping horse, but I was good with the little kids so he'll keep me around.  That was NOT a compliment.

Anneliese's mom is a submarine or she thinks she is a submarine.  We tried to get her into the corral numerous times and she always picked the middle of the dam to run to.  After the third time of trying we decided to give up.  The girls love Anneliese.  She's the smallest one of the trio.

Chase's mother had mastitis and no very cooperative.

My friend from North Dakota had car trouble near our house.  Her and her lovely family came to supper that night.  The kids helped feed the calves.  So much fun!!
Personally, I like to feed the calves from outside the corral, but the kids like being closer to the calves.  The kids also spend quite a bit of time playing with the calves during the day.  I think Gianna would move her bed down into the barn if Jimmer wasn't already living there.

Branding 2017

The morning started early...before six.
The moon was impressive at that time of morning.
I'm usually still sleeping - so I haven't seen the moon in the mornings.

The crew started arriving just after 6 and was trailing the first bunch before 6:30.

The first bunch was the young cows and their calves.

The wrestlers and other help showed up between 8-8:30.

 Beer cooler crowd

They raise their women tougher than nails around here!

Break time for the wrestlers and round up the next bunch for the riders.

Last of the calves for the day!
Gianna was SOOO excited to be able to ride a horse again.
Taking them back out to summer pasture.

Thanks to all our helpers and neighbors.  It was a great day with no accidents and lots of hard work.  We appreciate every single one of you!
